Attention [email protected] Era,
Since COVID-19 has hit, I've had (so much) more free time working from home, with almost nothing to do to fill up the moments in between meetings (in which I'd normally be finding ways to be productive in the office.) As a huge food/cooking-tv-show watcher but being horrible in the kitchen, and Youtube being a big part of that, I've taken an interest in simple, quick videos to help beef up my non-existent cooking skills.
What are you talking about?...
Sam Zien, a Canadian-born San Diego television cook, YouTube personality, restaurateur and cookbook author, does a fantastic job of creating content that is:
- Funny (warning: lots of NSFW language, but mostly censored)
- Simple (and short -- each video is approx. 20 mins or less)
- Uses everyday ingredients/language/equipment you have at home without the fancy or complicated extras
- NEW videos uploaded every Mon / Wed / Fri in 4K
Coming from someone who's holy grail has been fast food/uber eats/cooked food from work cafe during the week, and eating out on the weekends --AND as someone who has historically hated grocery stores and the kitchen - I'm having a blast. A tasty fucking blast.
Stuff I've Made So Far...
(if the thread gains traction, I will post pics)
There are a couple others, but Era only allows 4 media links.

I was bored. I was hungry. I watched YouTube. Now I'm a chef. And you can be one too.

So - anyone else a fan of Sam the Cooking Guy (and Max, his son + The Camera Guy)?
Any favorite videos or recipes you've tried?
Anyone been to his restaurants in CA? ( Not Not Tacos or Graze )
Any interest in this being a regularly updated OT? If so, we could share our favorite recipes and vids, tips, substitutions, etc.

I don't make or eat the stuff he makes that much, but I love his on-air persona and his clear love of the culinary arts.
You can learn a lot of tips from him to enhance your everyday cooking.
This is my favorite recipe of his:

Edit: Also - I have to try this... soooooon.
Been loving this dude since I started checking out his channel a couple of weeks back. I dunno if I'll ever actually make any of this stuff myself honestly, but I adore the process and his personality.
Agreed 100% on his love of culinary arts and his personality being a perfect fit for this.
Why not try it out on one of the simpler ones? I was just like you guys, a mere 2 -3 weeks ago! Now, I can't wait to try something new every day (even if it's not from Sam) -- and I'm thinking of starting my own YT channel. Ok, I'm joking about the channel, but man this has been one of the best decisions I've made this year. Although I'm sure I will get fat eventually because I have no restraint with good food. =P
One of the better food channels on YT.
Indeed!I like Sam, he's very entertaining

I'm super jealous of his outdoor kitchen. Life goals.
Same.

Heh, it's not so much that I find them too ambitious or anything but more the fact that while I love seeing him make White Castle burgers, or a big ass lasagne, or other such hearty (and admittedly sometimes grotesque - donut burgers!) endeavours, I'm trying to stay clean of fast foods right now.
Meet me on a cheat day however and... oh boy... we cookin' and feastin'!

His outdoor setup is fuckin inspiring. I promise I've vowed to upgrade my apartment to a house with backyard just so I can buy that EVO grill. I'm mad he gave one away about a year ago, before I knew about his videos lol.I'm super jealous of his outdoor kitchen. Life goals.
Ahh gotcha. Lol, yeah, I was in between watching easy Keto recipes since I was jump-starting my workouts again because boredom (although I'm mostly familiar with the techniques that work for me) and....things like Sam cooks, and you can see who won haha.Same.Heh, it's not so much that I find them too ambitious or anything but more the fact that while I love seeing him make White Castle burgers, or a big ass lasagne, or other such hearty (and admittedly sometimes grotesque - donut burgers!) endeavours, I'm trying to stay clean of fast foods right now.

He did a one-pan dinner video recently that I plan to abuse once I get back working out.

Yeah, this is one of the few things that stand out to me, and why I'm not 100% on the guy despite my praise earlier. His whole "Make America Cook Again" and douchey Vegan shirts are suspect as fuck.

if you eat burgers his best burger recipe is fantastic and super easy

I'll be honest, at first the Make America Cook Again shirt bothered me, but after I saw a black dude in a dive bar I go to all the time with a hat that read: "Make Harlem Shake Again", I'm okay with the parodies of the phrase. And he hasn't mentioned or brought politics into his videos so I'm still onboard for now.His whole "Make America Cook Again" and douchey Vegan shirts are suspect as fuck.

This is literally the only way I make my burgers now. I know he says in some videos to try not to do the same thing twice -- switch it up and discover new things. But the burgers from this technique are so...damn...easy and so...damn...delicious.if you eat burgers his best burger recipe is fantastic and super easy

yeah I goggled all that, it's pricey but awesome. You'd also need to live in an area where you could take advantage of that year around. I think he's in San Diego

Yeah, he is. I'm in Miami so could definitely use it year-round. Even in the summertime/rainy season, it typically only showers for an hour or so then it's sunny the rest of the day.yeah I goggled all that, it's pricey but awesome. Now all I need is a house. And $4500 for a grill.... :\

He's kind of out of ideas now tho. He's bringing back old stuff and re doing it. Same problem most cooking channels and shows have

Lucky for him, I'm sure his ad dollars and endorsement deals pay for a good portion of that.

Love his channel. Love Max. Love his recipes. He has a few restaurants in the SD area as well. He's kind of out of ideas now tho. He's bringing back old stuff and re doing it. Same problem most cooking channels and shows have
He's suffering from the YT problem of needing to churn out videos constantly in order to earn.

1000%.Lucky for him, I'm sure his ad dollars and endorsement deals pay for a good portion of that.
I just googled and it looks like he makes close to $1M a year from Youtube. Imagine that, plus the 2 restaurants.

Yeah, I haven't been a fan for long so I've been digging back into older videos (of which he has almost 8 years archived!) but I've definitely noticed some recent similar recipes and some "v2.0" videos re-mixing things he's done before.
